Why are US Dollars called Balboas in Panama (1 USD = 1 “Balboa”)?

- Every time we took a taxi in Nicaragua, the cab driver first had to stop at a gasoline station to fill his tank with a litre or two. Even the pick-up “cab” on Ometepe had to put a bit of extra gasoline in his tank before driving us home. He did this by siphoning the gasoline out of the tank of another car. Why don't Nica drivers fill up the tank?
- Ecuador uses the USD as currency. Can I use my leftover Balboas?

Leere Tanks in Nicaragua: Villeicht ist das Risiko hoch, dass Benzin gestohlen wird, wenn der Tank voll ist. Wenn er fast leer ist, hat der Dieb weniger Erfolgschancen und sicher nicht viel Benzin. Vielleicht.
